Many
people wonder why Pakistan could not make a success story when other countries
in the region like India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are making remarkable
progress on all social indicators (like world bank indicators of quality of
education system, enforcement of contracts etc).
Few people point fingers to
international forces that in pursuit of their vested interests have damaged
Pakistan and further aggravated its chronic problems. In part it may the case;
largely it is us as a nation who are responsible for this decay. Fundamental
problem is Pakistan’s failure as a state to build a structure that appreciates
and operates on the basis of merit.
Those who are in power love to break rules for their personal gains and benefits. Prime example of this mindset of Pakistani ruling elite is evident from recent sacking of Aitchison College’s Principal, Dr Agha Ghazanfar from his office. The noted educationist was removed for reportedly refusing admission to scions of influential political leaders against the merit.
Sources close to the developments revealed that grandsons’ of speaker national assembly
Sardar Ayaz Sadiq and former prime minister Syed Yousuf Raza Geelani were
failed to pass College entry test. Denying the influence from high-ups, Dr Agha
didn’t allow any admission against merit that led College Board of Governors to
remove him from his post.
Talking
to media Dr Agha confirmed that Aitchison is increasingly becoming a hotbed of
corruption and authorities bent to disregard merit.
A
nation with such an open and rampant disregard for merit does not need any
enemies. This incident alone is sufficient to explain why we are what we are
and why other countries are what they are. Unless merit is not held above personal
benefits and associations, development of a prosperous, peaceful and vibrant
society would remain mere a dream.
